  • Social Security freeze means seniors must scrimp
PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. - If her check were bigger, 76-year-old Agnes Conti might be able to spring for a better cut of meat for her pot roast. She could afford to send her nine grandchildren more than $20 for their birthdays and Christmas. She'd be able to buy some nice new clothes, like she sees on QVC, not what she settles for at Walmart.   Nations:U.S.   Source:(AP)   2009-10-16

Inner-city L.A. hungers for good grocery stores
Los Angeles - East L.A. resident Olga Perez has to take two buses to a store about eight miles away to get fresh fruits and vegetables, or decent cuts of meat, for her family.   Nations:U.S.   Source:(Christian Science Monitor)   2009-10-13

Salmonella prompts peanut butter recall in Ohio

Salmonella in 42 states; Minn. eyes peanut butter
ATLANTA - Federal officials have not yet identified the cause of a salmonella outbreak striking almost 400 people in 42 states, but state officials in Minnesota said Friday they believe peanut butter may be involved. On Friday, the Minnesota Department of Health said preliminary laboratory testing found salmonella bacteria in a 5-pound container of King Nut brand creamy peanut butter. The tests have not linked it to the type of salmonella in the national outbreak, but additional results are expected early next week.   Nations:U.S.   Activities:2009 Salmonella Outbreak   Source:(AP)   2009-01-09

Stores' dismal December means prices should fall
NEW YORK - Dismal sales figures for the holiday shopping season are probably a sign of worse to come for merchants in 2009 -- not only more sharp discounts and cheaper groceries but probably fewer stores.   Activities:2008 U.S. Recession   Source:(AP)   2009-01-08
