  • Facebook's Doppelganger Week Is Viral Groupthink
When I logged in to Facebook this week, I was greeted with updates from such friends as Mariah Carey, Natalie Portman and Ryan Gosling. Exciting, right? Except that when I clicked through, it was clear that these posts were from my same, lame no-name friends who were simply jumping on the latest Facebook bandwagon. Yes, it is (or was, as these things don't exactly have strict expiration dates) Celebrity DoppelgÄnger Week on Facebook, during which people replace their profile picture with the celeb they think looks the most like them. The Great Recession: Will Construction Workers Survive?
The middle and working-classes have been hammered by the Great Recession and no industry has taken it more on the chin than construction. Nationally, unemployment fell to 9.7% in January, but in construction it jumped to 24.7% from 18.7% in October. In many regions, union officials report 30% of their members are unemployed or "riding the bench."   Nations:U.S.   Activities:2008 U.S. Recession   Source:(Time)   2010-02-06

Lancet Retracts Vaccine-Autism Study, but Debate Goes On
More than any other research, it was a study published in British medical journal the Lancet in 1998 that helped foster the persisting notion that childhood vaccines can cause autism. On Tuesday, that flawed study, led by gastroenterologist Dr. Andrew Wakefield, was officially retracted by the journal's editors - a serious slap and rare move in the world of medicine.   People:Jenny McCarthy   Source:(Time)   2010-02-03

Tiger Woods Goes to Sex Rehab, but What Happens There?
The calls for Tiger Woods to get help did not go unheeded: on Jan. 16, after weeks of sordid allegations regarding his extramarital affairs, Radaronline.com reported that Woods had enrolled in the Gentle Path program at Pine Grove Behavioral Health and Addiction Services, in Hattiesburg, Miss., to be treated for sex addiction. Local television stations later confirmed the story. (See the top 10 apologies.)   Nations:U.S.   People:Tiger Woods   Source:(Time)   2010-01-26

Cocaine Diluter Levamisole Poses Health Risks
It was a medical mystery. In the summer of 2008, a man and woman, both in their 20s and both cocaine users, were separately admitted to a Canadian hospital with unremitting fevers, flulike symptoms and dangerously low white-blood-cell counts. Their symptoms were consistent with a life-threatening immune-system disorder called agranulocytosis, which kills 7% to 10% of patients and is rare except in chemotherapy patients and those taking certain antipsychotic medications.   Nations:Canada U.S. Switzerland Australia   Source:(Time)   2010-01-24
