A leading Taiwanese pop star is suing a Hong Kong magazine over an article alleging she engaged in explicit sexual acts with a fellow pop singer in Hong Kong.

Lawyers for Jolin Tsai filed a lawsuit against Oriental Sunday after the magazine in its May 24 issue published an article along side a photograph showing Tsai and Canto-pop star Edison Chen together in a car.

The magazine said the singers, both 25, had engaged in explicit sexual acts that "shook the car openly for half an hour," according to the court documents cited by the Standard newspaper in the southern Chinese territory.

The document said the article depicted Tsai's behaviour as "explicit, shocking, indecent, obscene, demeaning and degrading," leading to "public scandal, embarrassment, odium and contempt".

Emperor Group owns both Oriental Sunday and teen mag New Monday.

The company, which also belongs to a consortium that organises the Taiwanese star's world tour which kicks off in Hong Kong this week, dismissed suggestions the lawsuit was timed to coincide with her concerts.

The case followed the successful court injunction of Gillian Chung, one half of the chart-topping duo Twins, against a tabloid magazine over its controversial publication of her secretly photographed semi-nude pictures.

The photos, which showed her adjusting her bra as she changed backstage at a concert in Malaysia, sparked a furore in Hong Kong, where celebrity and political heavyweights joined protests calling for curbs on the media.
