Unique Kierkegaard book on auction after 150-year search
2006-09-26
A book by Danish philosopher Soeren Kierkegaard, featuring a handwritten dedication to Denmark's famed storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, is to be sold at auction after a 150-year search around the globe. Newspaper Jyllands-Posten said the dedication in "Either-Or" was the only hard evidence of direct contact between two of Denmark's biggest literary figures, and described the sale of the highly sought-after copy as a cultural and historic sensation. Acclaimed by critics as Kierkegaard's finest work, "Either-Or" caused a sensation when it was published in 1843. The existence of the dedicated copy was long known, but its location had remained a mystery. While the book's vendor did not wish to be identified, Bruun Rasmussen auction house, responsible for the sale, said the copy belonged to a family living in Copenhagen. Conservative estimates put the book's value at 100,000 kroner (17,000 dollars, 13,000 euros), although it was expected to fetch far more. The auction date was set for December 12
