2006-10-24
The musical version of iconic 1980s film "Dirty Dancing", set to premiere in London, has shattered advance sales records in the famous West End theatre district. The show has already rung up 11 million pounds (16 million euros, 20 million dollars) ticket sales, with close to 250,000 tickets sold so far. Celebrities including US actor Vince Vaughn and British business tycoon Sir Richard Branson are to attend the first night at the Aldwych theatre in central London on Tuesday. Based on the 1987 film starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, the show stars Australian Josef Brown and British newcomer Georgina Rich in the lead roles of Johnny and Baby. The scriptwriter of the original movie, Eleanor Bergstein, has adapted her screenplay for the stage show, which made its debut in Australia in 2004. The movie is the most successful independent film ever, and its soundtrack album, including the Oscar-winning song "(I've Had) The Time Of My Life", sold 41 million copies.
