Asian Games: Japan trails China after synchro team technical routine
2006-12-10
Japan's synchronized swimming team placed second behind China after the technical routine at the Asian Games on Saturday, a day after it suffered a shock defeat in the duet. The eight Japanese swimmers, performing to music from an animation about ninja called Naruto, collected 47.917 points and trailed China by 0.083 going into the team free routine later in the day. Led by Jiang Tingting and Jiang Wenwen, the twins who beat Emiko Suzuki and Saho Harada on Friday, China carried its momentum into the seven-nation team event at the Hamad Aquatic Center. "There is nothing we can do about the score," Harada said after she and her teammates -- Reiko Fujimori, Hiromi Kobayashi, Erika Komura, Takako Konishi, Ayako Matsumura, Erina Suzuki and Masako Tachibana -- found they had been outpointed by the Chinese team. "We just have to do what we've been doing in practice," Fujimori said. "We'll give it our all to outscore China in the end." North Korea is in third with 42.750 and Kazakhstan fourth with 41.834 as the synchronized swimming team event made its Asian Games debut.
