Japan, China likely to resume East China Sea gas talks early in 2007
2006-12-23
Japan and China are expected to resume talks early next year on the dispute over gas exploration rights in the East China Sea, diplomatic sources said Saturday. The talks, likely to be held sometime after mid-January, would be the first since the last round held in July in Beijing and the first under the administration of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who took office in September, they said. Abe and Chinese President Hu Jintao have agreed in their two rounds of talks to aim for an early resolution in the row with an eye on joint development. Japan plans to propose joint development near the median line in the sea but China is expected to propose joint development in other locations, they said. On the location of the next gas talks, a senior official of the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry said earlier that Japan would not mind whether they take place in Tokyo or Beijing. In the July talks, Japan and China remained apart over main points of contention in the dispute. Japan and China had sought resumption by the end of the year but preparations have been late due to six-party talks on the North Korean nuclear standoff in Beijing, which adjourned Friday without any progress. The gas exploration dispute stems from unsettled demarcation of the East China Sea where the two countries' economic waters overlap. A Chinese consortium has been developing gas fields in an area of the sea close to waters Japan claims and Japan is concerned the action could siphon off resources from what it claims to be the Japanese side.
