'Casino Royale' set to smash China records
2007-01-23
Casino Royale", the first James Bond film approved for Chinese cinemas, is set to smash mainland records for the biggest debut by a foreign film, its producers have said. The film starring Daniel Craig and Eva Green will be shown at more than 1,000 cinema screens across the country after its January 29 premier, Sony Pictures said. "This is going to be the largest premier for a foreign film in China with over 1,000 screens showing the film," Li Chow, Sony Pictures' general manager in China, told AFP. The film will be screened in all major Chinese cities and numerous smaller towns, she said, adding that the film will be shown unedited. "Casino Royale" is the first to win China's approval of 21 Bond films stretching back nearly 45 years. "We were very happy to finally get the approval, it was not easy, and we are even happier that we weren't required to cut anything from the film," Li said. Sony Pictures is unleashing a massive marketing campaign for the launch, with stars Craig and Green joining director Martin Campbell for next Monday's red-carpet China premier at an upmarket Beijing theater. The film will be released two weeks before the traditional Lunar New Year holiday and a month after Chinese director Zhang Yimou broke Chinese box office records with his "Curse of the Golden Flower." Sony has also taken out ads in major newspapers, magazines and on television to promote the film, while an Internet campaign has also been rolled out, Li said. Although James Bond has never made it to China's cinemas, the films have built up a following through pirated DVDs and VCDs which can be bought for about one US dollar. China allows 20 foreign films to be shown in its cinemas every year, of which about 15 are American blockbusters.
