Popular networking portal MySpace in fashion makeover
2007-01-31
As Paris wound up a frenetic fortnight of fashion shows, hip social networking site MySpace announced the launch of a new fashion channel offering a showcase for designers and fashion makeovers for users. "Fashion is probably the world's most global cultural domain," the head of MySpace France, Marc Mayor, told AFP in a phone interview Wednesday. "Even more than music or film which have language barriers, fashion crosses all borders." The February 1 launch of MySpace Boudoir (http://myspace.com/fashionboudoir) was timed to coincide with the close of the couture and men's ready-to-wear shows in Paris, the world's fashion capital, he said. The portal, owned by Rypert Murdoch's Fox Interactive Media Inc and with more than 100 million registered users worldwide, is used for connecting with friends and discovering music and video and integrates web profiles, video, mobile communication, blogs and instant messaging. To mark the launch of the new fashion channel, Paris designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac will redesign the homepage and create a "skin" allowing MySpace users to personalise their profiles. Other launch exclusives include parts of a documentary on fashion giant Karl Lagerfeld and new talents from the fledgling "Who's Next" Paris shows of new talents. More events will be timed to coincide with London's Fashion Week as well as the shows in New York and Tokyo. The new channel, starting on MySpace France, will also feature tips, invitations for private sales, a selection of fashion hot spots and advice from professionals. "The idea will be to give users access to big names and allow them to discover new talents while enabling designers to link up with customers," Mayor said. "That way a Brazilian can see and access a great bag from an Australian designer or a dress made in Britain."
