US to face China, Brazil in Women's World Cup tuneups
2007-03-12
A 1999 Women's World Cup final rematch with China will kick off a six-game US warm up series for September's Women's World Cup in China, the US Soccer Federation announced here on Monday. The US women, who won the 1991 and 1999 FIFA women's titles, will play host to China in a June 16 friendly at Cleveland and face Brazil on June 23 at East Rutherford, New Jersey. Other details of the US warm-ups are to be announced. The Americans, 6-0 with two drawn in their past eight matches against China, already own two triumphs in 2007 over this year's Cup hosts, having won 2-0 in China in January and 2-1 in Portugal earlier this month. Overall, the US women have a record of 18 victories 8 defeats and 11 drawn in matches with China. "Weve played China more times than any other team since Ive been head coach," US coach Greg Ryan said. "We know each others players and style so well, there are no surprises between the teams." The US-Brazil match will be the first rematch of the 2004 Olympic final won by the Americans in overtime. The Brazilians are 1-18 with two drawn against the US women but boast Marta, the 2006 FIFA Womens World Player of the Year.
