Late Taiwanese director Edward Yang will be named Asian Filmmaker of the Year at the Pusan International Film Festival this October, organisers said Wednesday.

Yang, a leading Taiwanese New Wave director who died in June aged 59, is to be recognised for his contribution to the development of Asian cinema, they said in a statement.

He won Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival for his 2000 film "Yi Yi: A One and a Two," the story of the emotional struggles of a businessman and the lives of his middle-class Taipei family as seen through three generations.

A retrospective and a seminar will be held in Yang's memory during the October 4-12 festival. Kaili Peng, Yang's wife and artistic partner, will receive the award on his behalf.

Former winners include another Taiwanese New Wave director, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, and Hong Kong actor and producer Andy Lau.

Asia's largest film festival is held annually in the southeastern city of Busan. It uses the old spelling for the city.

Oranisers also announced the setting up of an Asian Cinema Fund to offer filmmakers a chance to make high-quality films and enhance their creativity.

The fund totals 800 million won (840,000 dollars) and will fund development, production and post-production support for Asian documentaries and independent feature films.
