Liukin wins beam gold at world championships
2007-09-09
American Nastia Liukin won the balance beam gold medal at the world gymnastics championships on Sunday. Liukin, champion on the apparatus in 2005, earned a score of 16.025 with a series of deft movements to collect her second gold of the week after success in the team event. She had also won a silver medal on the asymmetric bars. China's Li Shanshan and Romanian Steliana Nistor shared the silver, 0.125 points behind Liukin. Li managed a medal despite falling off the apparatus because her routine had a high difficulty rating. American Shawn Johnson fell off the 10-cm wide beam twice to destroy her chances and finished last of the eight gymnasts in the final.
