Fielder's 48th homer helps Brewers pound Cardinals
2007-09-25
Prince Fielder hit his National League-leading 48th home run of the season in the Milwaukee Brewers 13-5 pounding of the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday. The victory moved the Brewers within three games of the Chicago Cubs in the race for the National League Central Division title. Both teams have six games remaining in the regular season. Any combination of four Chicago wins or Milwaukee losses would eliminate the Brewers from the pennant race. "We're in a tough spot right now, and we have to win all of our games," Brewers starter and winner Dave Bush (12-10) told reporters. Fielder slammed his three-run homer in the first inning to keep the Brewers in contention. The long ball to right center scored J.J. Hardy and Ryan Braun and put Milwaukee in front 4-0. "All we can try to do is win each game we have left," Fielder told reporters. "We can't worry about what the Cubs have to do." Fielder also had a double and a single in going 3-for-5 and scoring twice. Braun also homered. The rookie's two-run shot in the sixth boosted the Brewers to an 11-2 advantage. Bush gave up nine hits and five runs in six-plus inning in securing the win. Loser Adam Wainwright (13-12) was tagged for nine runs and eight hits in five innings. * Austin Kearns's three-run, fifth-inning homer led the Washington Nationals to a 13-4 road victory over the New York Mets. The loss dropped the Mets' National League East lead to two games over the Philadelphia Phillies, who had the day off. * Omar Vizquel drove in four runs as the San Francisco Giants handed the San Diego Padres their fourth straight loss, a 9-4 setback. The defeat left the Padres four games behind first-place Arizona in the National League West. (Writing by Gene Cherry in Raleigh, North Carolina)
