Jackson wows Spanish festival, promoting Harlin's "Cleaner"
2007-09-27
US actor Samuel L. Jackson took the limelight at the San Sebastian Film Festival Thursday to promote "Cleaner", a thriller by Finnish action movie producer Renny Harlin. Jackson plays Tom, a man who cleans up "hits" until the day he finds himself drawn into the mysterious circumstances of one crime after clearing away the evidence before the wrongdoing has even been reported. The idea of Tom and his profession intrigued Harlin and Jackson. "It's something people haven't seen before," Jackson told reporters. "He's cleaning the scene of the crime but also his life." The actor explained that the idea was to make the picture visually "stimulating" and hence "we tended to do things which brought the audience in closer" rather than stick overly closely to procedures which might be used in real-life crimebusting. "Cleaner", which primarily targets a young audience, is not in the official competition of films going for the Golden Shell award. But Jackson's appearance nonetheless created a flurry of interest in the northern Spanish resort city hosting the festival. Harlin was the driving force behind a number of other action movies, including "Driven" and "The Covenant".
