'Why Did I Get Married' top North American movie

Comedy-drama "Why Did I Get Married?" by director Tyler Perry and starring pop singer Janet Jackson was the top North American movie this weekend, taking in 21.5 million dollars, a Hollywood monitor reported Sunday. The film about the difficulty of maintaining a solid love relationship in modern times rose to the top position on the first week in theaters, pushing aside other contenders. Exhibitor Relations Co. reported that Walt Disney's football comedy "The Game Plan" was a distant second with 11.5 million dollars in receipts. "Michael Clayton," a thriller starring George Clooney, who plays a conflicted in-house "fixer" at one of the largest New York corporate law firms, was third with slightly over 11 million. Scary crime saga "We Own the Night" about a new breed of narcotics conquering New York and touching off a terrifying crime wave took fourth place after garnering 11 million dollars. Romantic comedy "The Heartbreak Kid" about a dream marriage turning into a nightmare was fifth with 7.4 million. Rounding out the top 10 were "Elizabeth: The Golden Age (6.2 million), "The Kingdom (4.6 million), "Across The Kingdom" (4 million), "Resident Evil: Extinction," (2.6 million) and "The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising (2.1 million).
