'American Gangster' outguns North American box-office
2007-11-05
"American Gangster" opened this weekend to a preliminary North America box-office record for an R-rated crime drama this weekend, outgunning Jerry Seinfeld's "Bee Movie" and netting 46.3 million dollars, industry figures showed Sunday. Ridley Scott's police drama starring Denzel Washington as a 1970s Manhattan drug kingpin brought to his knees by Russel Crowe's relentless detective was also the highest opener of the fall season to date, according to figures from Variety.com. Comedian Seinfeld's computer animated "Bee Movie," from DreamWorks Animation, opened to second place, with 39.1 million dollars. The film, in which Seinfeld dubbs the main character, is the comedian's first major work since his hit television series. Slasher movie "Saw IV," with Tobin Bell as the murderer Jigsaw, fell to third place with 11 million dollars after opening in the top spot last week, followed by family comedy "Dan in Real Life," which in its second week grossed 8.1 million dollars. In fifth place came vampire flick "30 Days of Night" with four million dollars in its third week since opening. Sixth place with 3.8 million went to Disney football comedy "The Game Plan." Newcomer comedy drama "Martian Child," starring John Cusack as a writer who adopts a child he increasingly suspects comes from another planet, opened in seventh place with 3.6 million dollars. Bringing up the rear were "Michael Clayton" (2.9 million dollars); "Why Did I Get Married," (2.7 million) and "Gone Baby Gone" (2.4 million).
