LIMA, Peru - President George W. Bush says he understands that countries across the globe are being hurt by the financial crisis.

Bush, addressing an economic summit in Peru, says because the economic problems are so widespread, all nations -- both developed and developing nations -- must work together to find solutions.

Bush touted free markets and free trade. Bush called on the members of the 21-nation Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum not to retreat into protectionism to buffer what he called the "painful effects of the financial crisis."

The president said it is "essential that nations resist the temptation to overcorrect" to fix fiscal crisis.
