NEW YORK (AFP) - Broadway theaters are to dim their lights Tuesday in honor of British dramatist Harold Pinter, who died last week.

"The marquees of Broadway theatres in New York will be dimmed in his memory on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at exactly 7:00 pm for one minute," the Broadway League, a trade association, said in a statement.

Charlotte Saint Martin, Executive Director of The Broadway League, said: "Harold Pinter has been called one of the most influential and imitated playwrights of his generation.... We are so grateful for his genius and distinct contributions to modern theatre."

Pinter died on December 24, Christmas Eve, at the age of 78. He had been suffering from cancer.
