BEIJING - Zhang Yimou, the famed film director who masterminded the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, will direct celebrations marking 60 years of communist China, state media said Friday.

The 57-year-old will team up with one of his Olympic creative assistants to put on a show in Beijing on October 1 commemorating 60 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China, the official China Daily said.

The newspaper quoted an unnamed senior Beijing municipal government official as confirming Zhang's involvement.

Zhang Jigang, a member of China's army arts troupe who was the chief choreographer in the Beijing Olympic ceremonies, also confirmed he would be working with the film director again for the 60-year anniversary.

He told the China Daily that he would be directing a big dance performance called "The Road to Revival", though no other details were given about the celebrations.

Zhang was widely acclaimed for his direction of Beijing's Olympic opening and closing ceremonies in August, although it emerged later that some key parts of the event had been faked under the orders of Communist Party chiefs.

He gained worldwide recognition for films including 1987's "Red Sorghum" about a woman's life working on a distillery for sorghum liquor, and the 2002 martial arts blockbuster "Hero".
