Steelers celebrate Super Bowl win with parade
2009-02-04
PITTSBURGH (AFP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers have been celebrating their record sixth Super Bowl title with thousands of their towel waving fans. An estimated 250,000 fans were on hand cheering and twirling their yellow towels to honor the Steelers, who captured the title with a dramatic 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII on Sunday. Accompanied by high school marching bands and pickup trucks carrying players, the parade took place in typical Steelers weather - cold and occasional snow. "What do you say to this?" coach Mike Tomlin asked the crowd. "Steeler Nation, you leave us all speechless, man, we just appreciate the love. How about the Steelers? How about the greatest fans in the world? How about number six? Thank you, we love you guys." Police even were in a celebratory mood, waving their Terrible Towels from atop horses. Tomlin was perched on a red convertible, while players followed behind holding video cameras and waving to the crowd. Quarterback Ben Roethelisberger and wide receiver Santonio Holmes, who hooked up on the game-winning six-yard touchdown pass with 35 seconds remaining, drew the loudest cheers when they addressed the crowd. Loudspeakers throughout the parade route alternately played "Here we Go, Steelers" and "We are the Champions," drawing cheers each time. Team owner Dan Rooney also drew loud cheers when he addressed the crowd and suggested that maybe the team would win its seventh Super Bowl next season. "Stay with us," Rooney said. "Maybe we'll get the seventh next year."
