'Friday the 13th' slashes box office charts

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Horror-slasher flick "Friday the 13th" tore into the North American box office listings, becoming the weekend's biggest earning film, preliminary figures showed Sunday. The return of Jason Voorhees to Camp Crystal Lake -- hockey mask and all -- chalked up 42.2 million dollars in its opening weekend, Exhibitor Relations said. In the latest installment of Friday franchise Director Marcus Nispel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) retells the original 1980s hit. The film appeared in 3,105 theaters, earning an average of 13,605 dollars in each. That was enough to best last week's number one "He's Just Not That Into You," which took the second spot on Valentine's Day weekend. The star-studded romantic comedy set in Baltimore continued its box office success, netting 19.6 million dollars in its second week, for a total of 55 million dollars. In third place was "Taken," a Paris-set thriller which features Liam Neeson as a retired CIA agent seeking the gang of sex traffickers who have kidnapped his daughter. That tale has raked in nearly 78 million dollars in three weeks. The light-hearted romantic comedy "Confessions of a Shopaholic" was worth 15.4 million dollars in its opening week to come in fourth. Animated children's adventure "Coraline" claimed the fifth spot bagging 15 million dollars in its second weekend. "Paul Blart Mall Cop" -- the tale of a security guard turned hero -- dropped one spot from last week to sixth, but continued to up its earnings, which now stand at 110.6 million dollars. "The International" which features British actor Clive Owen as an Interpol agent tackling a powerful and shady bank across the globe, came in seventh, earning 10 million dollars in its first week. It was trailed by "The Pink Panther 2" starring Steve Martin which earned nine million dollars. The Oscar-nominated "Slumdog Millionaire" took ninth place with 7.9 million dollars in its seventh week in theatres, for a total draw so far of 86.6 million dollars, while sci-fi thriller "Push" grabbed 10th place.
