Report: Globe union asks for deadline extension
2009-05-01
BOSTON - Leaders of The Boston Globe's largest union have reportedly asked the newspaper's owners to extend the deadline for millions of dollars worth of concessions. The Boston Globe reported Friday union leaders are making the extension request after discovering what they are calling a $4.5 million accounting error. The union says ownership did not take into account people who have left their jobs since the beginning of the year. The paper's owner, The New York Times Co., has said Friday is the deadline for reaching agreement on $20 million in concessions from the unions, including $10 million from the Newspaper Guild. The Times Co. is threatening to close the paper unless the unions agree to the givebacks. Management has refused to comment on negotiations.
