PARIS - France's Olympic movement broke a tradition of political neutrality on Tuesday with an appeal for sports enthusiasts across the country to reject far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen at Sunday's presidential election. The National Olympic Committee called on the 14 million members of its 89 federated bodies to vote for conservative President Jacques Chirac against the anti-immigrant National Front chief, citing the "humanist values" of the world of sport. "Because sport is a school for life, because sports clubs are places of welcome and fraternity...the board members...call for a vote on May 5 for Jacques Chirac," the committee said in a statement which a spokesman said was unprecedented. Le Pen courted controversy when he scoffed at the success of a multi ethnic French soccer team that was hailed as an example of racial harmony when it won the World Cup four years ago. ... ...
