  • Black support high for Obama's race-neutral stance
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - In this banking center walloped by the Great Recession, where unemployment just hit a 20-year high and as many as one in three black people are out of work, blacks could easily be frustrated with President Barack Obama's insistence that a rising economic tide for all will lift African-American boats.   Nations:U.S.   People:Barack Obama   Activities:2008 U.S. Recession   Source:(AP)   2010-03-20

More Homeless Americans Living in Cars and Campers
Tim Barker never thought he'd have to live in his truck. Four months ago, the plumber was in a one-bedroom apartment in California's San Fernando Valley, with a pool and a Jacuzzi. Then, on his birthday in October, he and 199 other plumbers were laid off by their union, Local 761 in Burbank. Now Barker's son sleeps on the sofa of his cousin's one-bedroom Hollywood apartment, and Barker sleeps on the roof of the apartment building - or in his 2003 Ford Ranger pickup. "I'm 47, and I've never lived in my car," says Barker, a husky 220-lb. single father with sandy hair and a rapid-fire voice. In January, as torrential rains pelted the streets of Southern California, father and son were sleeping in the truck in San Pedro, next to the Los Angeles Harbor. "We were able to spend four nights in the Vagabond Motel, but for two nights we slept in the car," says Barker. "It was raining, cold, and the cat was jumping on us. We both got sick."   Nations:U.S.   Activities:2008 U.S. Recession   Source:(Time)   2010-02-14

The Great Recession: Will Construction Workers Survive?
The middle and working-classes have been hammered by the Great Recession and no industry has taken it more on the chin than construction. Nationally, unemployment fell to 9.7% in January, but in construction it jumped to 24.7% from 18.7% in October. In many regions, union officials report 30% of their members are unemployed or "riding the bench."   Nations:U.S.   Activities:2008 U.S. Recession   Source:(Time)   2010-02-06

Obama's $3.8 trillion budget heading to Congress
WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama's proposed budget predicts the national deficit will crest at a record-breaking $1.6 trillion in the current fiscal year, then start to recede in 2011 to $1.3 trillion, a congressional official said Sunday.   People:Barack Obama Mitch McConnell   Activities:111th Congress Obama Admin. 2008 U.S. Recession   2010-01-31
