Venezuela's Chavez sees US threat in Dutch islands
COPENHAGEN - Hugo Chavez accused the Netherlands on Thursday of allowing the United States to use Dutch islands off Venezuela's Caribbean coast to prepare a possible military attack against his country.

Tense atmosphere clouds climate talks

Floods, landslides kill 124 in El Salvador
SAN SALVADOR (AFP) - Floods and landslides left at least 124 people dead in El Salvador on Monday after a late-season hurricane ravaged parts of Central America and took aim for the United States.

Caribbean, Gulf spared widespread coral damage
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Lower-than-feared sea temperatures this summer gave a break to fragile coral reefs across the Caribbean and the central Gulf of Mexico that were damaged in recent years, scientists said Thursday.

Conditions combined for devastating tsunami
WASHINGTON - Because of a lethal combination of geology and geography, the people of American Samoa didn't stand much of a chance. Almost every condition that triggers bad tsunamis was in place this time, generating waves that raced toward the island territory at speeds approaching 530 mph, or as fast as a 747 jumbo jet. And there was almost nothing to slow the water down.
