2007-01-01
The Detroit Red Wings thumped Los Angeles 6-2 on Sunday, chalking up their 12th consecutive win over the Kings. Six different players tallied for the Wings while Dominik Hasek made 28 saves. Tomas Holmstrom scored the only goal of the first period before Alexander Forlov tied the scores at 1-1 with the man advantage early in the second. Valtteri Filppula and Pavel Datsyuk put Detroit up 3-1 but Forlov scored his second of the night at 12:42 of the second period to keep the Kings within reach. However Kris Draper, Mikael Samuelsson and Jason Williams scored to make the game safe for the Wings, who will retire former captain Steve Yzerman's number in a ceremony before Tuesday's game. The Wings are 13-3-3 at home this season and moved to within two points of the first place Nashville Predators in the Central Division with the victory. "I thought we responded real well after their second goal," Detroit captain Nicklas Lidstrom told reporters. Mathieu Garon allowed all six Detroit goals before being replaced by Barry Brust. *Anaheim's All-Star defenseman Chris Pronger suffered a broken foot in the Ducks' 4-3 loss to the Minnesota Wild. Anaheim's Teemu Selanne, playing in his 1,000th NHL game, had two goals and an assist. *In Dallas, Joe Thornton scored his 200th NHL goal and added a pair of assists as the San Jose Sharks broke a three-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over the Stars. *Peter Forsberg had three assists as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-2. *Jarome Iginla had a goal and two assists as the Calgary Flames beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-2.
