Soggy throng delights in Prince's Purple Rain performance
2007-02-05
Mother Nature supplied the showers, but leave it to Grammy Award winning performer Prince to provide the Purple Rain. The American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member delighted the sold-out Super Bowl crowd of 75,000 at Dolphin Stadium with a medley of songs including the top-ten hits Let's Go Crazy and Purple Rain. Wearing a black kerchief to keep his head dry from heavy rain, Prince danced and pranced across the stage while his female dancers writhed in the background. The show by the six-time Grammy winner culminated with a spectacular light and fireworks display. Prince, who has sold close to 100 million albums, held a press conference earlier in the week in which he performed for the media but did not take questions. He won an Oscar for Best Soundtrack for an album that accompanied the 1984 movie Purple Rain. The pre-game festivities got underway early Sunday morning with a performance in the parking lot of Dolphin Stadium that featured Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks taking the stage. Cirque Du Soleil and DJ Louie Vega also performed in the high-energy pre-game festivities. Billy Joel also helped opened the spectacle by singing the national anthem. It was the second time for Joel as he sang the Star Spangled Banner prior to Super Bowl 23 in 1989.
