2007-03-14
Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby scored the winner in a 5-4 shootout victory over Buffalo on Tuesday, giving Penguins fans double cause to celebrate after the team reached a deal on a new arena to keep them in the city. Crosby had a goal and two assists in regulation as the Penguins improved to 4-0-1 in their past five games while handing the Eastern Conference leading Sabres their season-high fifth straight defeat. Penguins co-owner Mario Lemieux received a standing ovation at center ice before the game as fans celebrated the deal reached between the team and local and state officials earlier in the day. "I am here to announce that your Pittsburgh Penguins will remain here in Pittsburgh, where they belong," Lemieux told the cheering crowd. Jason Pominville, Dmitri Kalinin, Daniel Briere and Chris Drury scored for Buffalo in regulation, while Ryan Malone, Maxime Talbot, Crosby and Sergei Gonchar replied for the Penguins. *John Grahame made 26 saves in place of the injured Cam Ward as the Carolina Hurricanes stayed scored a 3-1 win over the Florida Panthers. *Nik Antropov scored the go-ahead goal in the third period as the Toronto Maple Leafs edged the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2. *The New York Islanders lost 5-3 to the Montreal Canadiens. The Isles also lost goalie Rick DiPietro with an apparent head injury in the first period. *The Detroit Red Wings moved within a point of the NHL leading Nashville Predators with a 5-2 win.
