Two climbers die in fall from Mt McKinley
2007-05-19
Two climbers died after falling during a descent from Alaska's Mount McKinley, becoming the first fatalities on North America's tallest peak this year, the National Park Service said on Friday. Mizuki Takahashi, 36, and Brian Massey, 27, both from the Seattle, Washington, area, died after tumbling 1,900 feet late Thursday during their descent from a point near the summit of 20,320-foot McKinley, the Park Service said. Takahashi died at the scene and Massey, who was taken to a park ranger tent for medical treatment, died on Friday after failing to regain consciousness. A team of park rangers patrolling the mountain witnessed the fall and immediately went to the aid of the climbers, who were roped together, the Park Service said. Kris Fister, spokeswoman for Alaska's Denali National Park, site of McKinley, said the rangers do not know what caused the fall.
