All to play for in National League playoff chase
2007-09-28
The Colorado Rockies are rising in the West and the New York Mets desperate to stop an Eastern free-fall as seven teams fight for four National League postseason berths in the last weekend of the regular season. In the American League, the playoff combatants are decided with the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Angels, Cleveland Indians and New York Yankees safely through. But the National League picture is a dizzying blur. With three games left, all three divisions and the wildcard berth are up for grabs in season-ending series starting on Friday night. The Chicago Cubs hold a two-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers in the Central, the West-leading Arizona Diamondbacks are one game ahead of the San Diego Padres and two up on the Rockies while the Philadelphia Phillies and the Mets are level on top of the East. Divisional ties could mean additional playoff games will settle the postseason field, stretching the marathon season even longer. Arizona has 89 victories, the Padres have 88 while the Phillies, Mets and Rockies are on 86, which adds up to another tight competition in the hunt for the wildcard berth handed to the best team outside of first place. The Rockies have produced a late surge, with power hitting and a strong bullpen helping the team string together 11 successive wins. The Padres play their last series in Milwaukee against the Brewers while the Rockies host Arizona. The Cubs are on the road against Cincinnati (71-88), the Phillies entertain the Washington Nationals (72-87) and the Mets host the Florida Marlins (69-90). The Mets, who have held first place in the East since May 16, have lost four in a row and 10 of their last 14 to squander a seven-game lead over the Phillies.
