Bristol-Myers Squibb Co on Thursday reported a loss from continuing operations as special charges more than offset strong sales growth of its array of prescription drugs.

The New York-based drugmaker said it lost $133 million, or 7 cents per share. That compared with a loss from continuing operations of $170 million, or 9 cents per share, in the year-ago period when the company took charges to retire debt and finance the proposed settlement of a federal probe into its marketing practices.

Excluding special items, Bristol-Myers earned 33 cents per share.
