NEW YORK (AFP) - New York's Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Friday awarded cargo ship captain Richard Phillips the keys to the city for his "gallantry" when taken hostage by pirates off Somalia.

"You're role models for New Yorkers, for young kids," Bloomberg told Phillips and crewman William Rios at a ceremony in City Hall.

Bloomberg joked he'd been thinking of giving the sailors tickets to the New York Mets baseball game Friday -- until he realized the Mets faced the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Phillips, who gave himself up as a hostage to save his crew and ship, said he was ready to go back to sea. "That's what we do. We're seamen."

Three pirates were killed when the US navy rescued Phillips. A fourth was flown to New York, where he faces trial for piracy.
