Russia's Zhores Alferov is one of three scientists to share the 2000 Nobel Physics prize. Alferov of A.F. Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute in St Petersburg and Herbert Kroemer of the University of California at Santa Barbara share half the prize for developing semiconductors with practical uses from cellphones to barcode readers.
